Morocco chairs the 24th Steering Committee meeting of the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network (GNSSN)
Vienna, 6–7 July 2026 — Mr. Saïd MOULINE, Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR), chaired the 24th meeting of the Steering Committee of the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network (GNSSN), held on 6 and 7 July 2026 at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna in a hybrid format. AMSSNuR was also represented by its Secretary General, Mr. Reda NOUR, who participated in this high-level international meeting.
Bringing together members of the Steering Committee, representatives of the IAEA, and leaders of the regional and thematic networks affiliated with GNSSN, the meeting provided an opportunity to review the Network’s strategic priorities, strengthen coordination among its members, and set the direction for its future activities. It also reaffirmed Morocco’s leading role in the governance of GNSSN and its commitment to advancing international cooperation, knowledge sharing and capacity building in nuclear and radiological safety and security.
GNSSN: A Global Platform for Cooperation and Knowledge Sharing
Since its establishment, GNSSN has evolved from an information-sharing platform into a global network that connects Member States, regional networks, technical and scientific organizations, and experts around a common objective: strengthening nuclear safety and security worldwide through cooperation, capacity building, peer learning and the exchange of experience and good practices.
Morocco’s chairmanship of the Steering Committee reflects the international community’s confidence in the Kingdom’s regulatory expertise and its sustained commitment to promoting international cooperation and strengthening nuclear and radiological governance.
The meeting reviewed the achievements of GNSSN and its associated regional and thematic networks, while highlighting the IAEA’s capacity-building initiatives in the fields of nuclear safety and security. Discussions focused on regulatory developments related to small modular reactors (SMRs), regulatory experience feedback, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and key outcomes of recent international conferences. Participants also reviewed progress achieved by partner networks, endorsed updates to the GNSSN Action Plan for 2026–2027, and identified priorities for further strengthening international cooperation and knowledge sharing.
In his opening remarks, Mr. MOULINE welcomed the participants and commended their continued commitment to GNSSN, emphasizing that their collective engagement remains the driving force behind the Network’s growth and success. He also expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders for their sustained support in implementing GNSSN’s activities and highlighted the essential contribution of the regional and thematic networks to advancing cooperation, facilitating knowledge exchange and translating shared objectives into tangible results.
Mr. MOULINE underlined that the international nuclear community is undergoing profound transformation, driven by the deployment of small modular reactors, the digitalization of regulatory activities, and the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence as a strategic enabler for nuclear safety and security. He stressed that these developments further reinforce GNSSN’s role as a global platform for international cooperation, peer learning and the exchange of regulatory knowledge.
Mr. MOULINE further emphasized the central role of the regional and thematic networks, noting that their achievements and initiatives demonstrate the tangible value of international cooperation while creating new opportunities for collaboration, mutual support and the sharing of expertise.
Morocco Reaffirms Its Leadership in International Nuclear Governance
Through its chairmanship of GNSSN, AMSSNuR reaffirms Morocco’s active contribution to the governance of the international nuclear safety and security framework and its continued commitment to strengthening global cooperation, promoting regulatory excellence and supporting capacity building for the benefit of Member States worldwide.
