AMSSNuR highlights Morocco’s Nuclear Security experience during AFCON 2025

Rabat, 7–9 July 2026 — Lessons learned, international cooperation and field demonstrations were the focus of the technical visit dedicated to the nuclear security measures deployed during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. On this occasion, AMSSNuR reaffirmed its commitment to a robust, coordinated and sustainable national framework.
The Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR), represented by its Secretary General, Mr. Reda NOUR, took part in this African gathering, organized by the Ministry of the Interior in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Bringing together national institutions and international experts — most notably from Côte d’Ivoire, host of AFCON 2023 — as well as representatives from the African countries hosting the next edition, AFCON 2027, namely Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, the gathering provided a platform for exchange dedicated to strengthening capacities for the prevention, detection and response to risks involving nuclear or other radioactive materials during major public events at the continental level.
Turning experience into lasting capacities
More than a review, this gathering constituted a genuine platform for South-South cooperation and knowledge transfer. Over three days, participants examined the lessons drawn from the measures implemented during AFCON 2025, hosted by Morocco, with a view to identifying good practices, areas for improvement, and capacities to be sustained for the organization of the next edition, AFCON 2027, in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Institutional presentations, technical exchanges, field visits and operational demonstrations addressed the various components of a nuclear and radiological security framework suited to major events such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup.
Nuclear Security, a collective responsibility
In his address, Mr. Reda NOUR commended the role played by the Ministry of the Interior in the exemplary coordination of the national arrangements deployed during AFCON 2025. He also expressed AMSSNuR’s appreciation to the IAEA for its steady support and the quality of its partnership with the Kingdom of Morocco.
Mr. NOUR recalled that nuclear and radiological security constitutes an essential component of the Kingdom’s overall security framework, and that its effectiveness rests on the coordinated mobilization of all national institutions concerned. He also underlined the value of sharing experience with Ivorian partners, noting that the lessons learned from AFCON 2023 and 2025 represent an essential asset for promoting continuous improvement and strengthening regional cooperation across Africa.
Looking ahead to upcoming international milestones
As new major milestones approach, particularly AFCON 2027 and the 2030 World Cup, the lessons drawn from AFCON 2025 provide a strategic foundation for consolidating national and regional capacities in nuclear and radiological security.
Through its participation in this technical visit, AMSSNuR reaffirms a firm conviction: the security of major events is built over time, through anticipation, expertise, exercise, coordination and the sharing of good practices.
