Addis Ababa, 25–26 June 2026 – The Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR), represented by its Secretary General, Mr. Reda NOUR, participated virtually in the 7th Conference of States Parties to the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Treaty of Pelindaba), organized by the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa.

Held in a hybrid format, the high-level conference brought together the States Parties to review progress in the implementation of the Treaty of Pelindaba, strengthen regional cooperation on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and promote the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology as key enablers of Africa’s sustainable development.

The Moroccan delegation, led by H.E. Mr. Mohamed ARROUCHI, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), reaffirmed Morocco’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Africa’s nuclear capacities through knowledge sharing, expertise transfer and human resource development in the fields of nuclear safety, nuclear security, safeguards and the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology.
The delegation also highlighted Morocco’s sustained contribution to capacity building across the continent by hosting several hundred African officials, experts and professionals each year through specialized training courses, technical workshops and other capacity-building initiatives. These efforts contribute to strengthening technical and regulatory competencies and enhancing the effectiveness of national nuclear regulatory infrastructures throughout Africa.

Through its participation in this Conference, AMSSNuR reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the African nuclear safety, nuclear security and safeguards framework, while further enhancing cooperation among African regulatory authorities in line with international safety and security standards and the Kingdom of Morocco’s vision for effective South–South cooperation.

The Conference also provided an opportunity to review AFCONE’s activities since the previous meeting and to identify strategic priorities for the continued implementation of the Treaty of Pelindaba, at a time when the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology are playing an increasingly important role in supporting Africa’s sustainable development, socioeconomic progress and resilience.
